Imagine writing about the things you love, sharing your thoughts with the world, bringing a smile to someone’s face through your words and earning money while doing this. Doesn’t it sound wonderful? These were exactly my thoughts when I first learnt about blogging. Ever since I heard one of my relatives talking about blogs, I became fascinated with the idea of blogging and dreamt of becoming a blogger. However, I must confess, that starting my own blog seemed like the most daunting and intimidating task. I was full of trepidation and felt lost and confused as to how I should begin and what should I do to turn this dream into reality. I was unfamiliar with blogging platforms like WordPress and Blogger and being technologically adept is not my forte. Concepts like SEO, Google AdSense and traffic generation via Social media platforms seemed mind boggling; however, once I was sure that I wanted to become a blogger, I decided to give it my all.
I followed 5 simple steps to ensure that I achieve my goal of setting up my own personal blog. In fact, whenever I wanted to achieve anything- big or small, I always relied on these 5 pointers. I have never consciously followed these steps, but after I started blogging, I realised that I had unknowingly followed these steps and it had worked in my favour. This realisation prompted me to pen down a roadmap that can be used by anyone who wants to achieve anything. Anybody who wishes to fulfil a particular goal, be it performing well in exams, losing weight or achieving professional goals, can rely on these suggestions. So if you’re having a hard time achieving a goal and are wondering what to do, read on!
1. Begin your journey, one small step at a time
Any goal can seem like an uphill task if seen from a distance but the good news is that you don’t have to know all the answers right away. If you try to cram the whole cake into your mouth you’re bound to get indigestion. You can only relish the cake if you eat it one bite after another. Likewise, once you have established what your goal is, think about the first step that you can take to come closer to your goal. It’s perfectly alright if you don’t know everything, all you need to do is figure out the first step. Martin Luther King sums this up beautifully when he said this-“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” So slowly move forward one step at a time and in no time you will have achieved your ultimate goal!
Once I figured out that I wanted to be a blogger, I started reading up articles about blogging and later even attended an event organised by BlogAdda, that gave people the opportunity to interact with and listen to famous and successful bloggers in India. That is how I gradually learnt more about the art of blogging. Rather than rushing to set up my blog, I took one small step at a time and this approach definitely helped me feel calmer and confident and instantly took off the pressure.
2. Be Consistent
Yes, being consistent in your efforts is the key to successfully achieving anything that you desire. For instance, if you are determined to get fitter and lose weight it is very important to exercise regularly and be sincere and consistent in your efforts. Stopping mid-way out of sheer laziness or lack of self-control will not get you the desired results.
Kaajal and I had no idea how to monetise from our blog and we had to read a lot of articles on the internet to learn more about SEO ranking, Google AdSense and other nitty gritties of monetisation. Although at times it would get tiring, we made it a point to read a few articles everyday day as procrastination soon makes you lose interest in your work and makes your goal a distant unfulfilled dream. So working consistently towards your goal will help you stay focused.
3. Celebrate Small Victories
Many a times we get so busy working towards achieving our goals that we forget to appreciate all the efforts and hard work put in by us. One of the best ways to keep yourself motivated is to stop and look at how far you have come. It’s good to celebrate every small victory because every little milestone matters. Even if you’re far away from your ultimate goal and maybe you still have a long way to go, you must remember to occasionally give yourself a pat on your back and congratulate yourself for your dedication and commitment so far.
You can go out with friends, celebrate with family, or do anything that pleases you, simply to acknowledge the fact that you have taken concrete steps towards achieving your goals and are doing a good job. Kaajal and I make it a point to celebrate every small victory and every time we made some progress with our blog, we would head out to our favourite coffee shop (Moshe’s at crossword because we don’t just love the coffee and sandwiches out there but also the books!), watch a movie or treat ourselves to some lip smacking pastry, donut or pancake. Every small progress calls for celebration coz ‘every drop of water makes a mighty ocean’
4. Rest if you must, but Don’t Quit
At times, when the going gets tough, it’s tempting to just give up. It can get frustrating when you suddenly hit a roadblock and don’t know how to tackle a particular problem. I faced a similar situation while trying to monetise from my blog. As per the rule a person can only apply for blog monetisation on Google AdSense after a period of six months. After blogging diligently for six months Kaajal and I applied to Google Adsense with baited breath but unfortunately our request was turned down.
I was really disappointed as I was expecting a positive response and for a second I was tempted to give up. However, I decided to take a small break and not fret over the problem. After a week I felt recharged enough to tackle the problem and the next time we applied, our request for monetisation got accepted! So the next time you’re facing a challenge and feel the urge to give in, rest if you must….but don’t quit. I’d like to quote the last few lines of my favourite poem ‘Don’t Quit’ by John Greenleaf Whittier which has always inspired me to never give up on my dreams-
‘‘And you never can tell just how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit—
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.’’
5. Be Positive, Always
You can never succeed in achieving any goal if you do not have a positive mind-set. Even before you begin, the first thing that you should work towards is cultivating a positive attitude. Instead of anticipating problems and difficulties, anticipate success. Being positive helps in more ways than you realise because it not only serves as a source of motivation, but also equips you to deal with difficulties. While it can be challenging to stay positive in the face of trying times, it is nonetheless worth the effort because negative thoughts will never let you achieve what you desire. Whenever I start something new, I try to stay positive and this approach has always helped me, especially in the case of blogging. Despite facing rejection, I continued to believe that I will succeed and soon enough, I did.
So the next time you want to achieve your goals, just follow the kktwins guide and sure enough you’ll achieve your dream before you even know it!
