New Year, New Resolutions – by Kinjal

We have just entered a brand new year -2018 and that means it’s time to make some New Year resolutions. For some it is losing weight, making more profits, getting a promotion or buying a new house. But when they fail to achieve it, they are disappointed and that marks the end of New Year resolutions for them. Now, more and more people are wary of making one. ‘Why make them when you are bound to break them sooner or later.’ So their New Year resolution is- to make no New Year resolution at all!

But this year, I’m going to urge everyone to make some very simple New Year resolutions because in the end it all boils down to being happy. The sole reason we make resolutions is because we want to feel happy and we know that fulfilling them will make us feel ecstatic. So this year, let’s do something that’s doable and something that is bound to make us happy!

1. Smile more often:

When you wake up in the morning, the first thing you should do is close your eyes and just smile. When you smile, even without a reason, your body releases feel good hormones called endorphins. This will automatically improve your mood and make you feel happier. Instead of rushing into your day, take charge of it and for that all you need to do is just smile.

2. Do a random act of kindness:

It could be something as simple as holding the door for someone, sharing your meal with a friend, helping an old person cross the road or carrying something heavy for an elderly person.  Random acts of kindness will not only make the person you’re helping feel grateful but also give you a sense of happiness at having helped a fellow human.  Make it your intention to do at least one random act of kindness and then you’re day is sure to go great.

3. Spend more time with your family:

We all lead busy lives and have tons of things to do- going to work, meeting deadlines, studying for exams, completing assignments …. The list is endless! But in the midst of all this chaos it is important to spend time with our families. It could be drinking a cup of tea with your mother, watching a game of cricket with your dad or simply sitting together with your family at the end of the day and telling them how your day went. Making room for some family time gives a sense of peace and comfort that is unparalleled.

4. Do something that you love:

We all have that one thing that we love to do but somehow we never get around to doing it. So this year make a resolution to do that one thing that you absolutely love to do. It could be going on a trip with your BFFs, joining salsa classes, stargazing, learning scuba diving or anything else that makes your heart beat faster and glow with happiness.

5. Indulge in some ‘me’ time:

It is very important to be in touch with your inner self and spend some quality time alone. Make a conscious effort to stay away from social media or any other electronic gadgets when you decide to take time off for yourself. Take a walk in a quiet place, watch the waves crash on the sea shore or simply admire the setting sun in solitude or watch the twinkling stars at night for a few minutes. All this will have a calming effect and help you think clearly.

6. Love yourself- flaws and all!

The first thing we need to learn is to love our self the way we are and accept our flaws instead of criticising ourselves. Even if you think you are overweight, not pretty enough, confident enough or intelligent enough, let go of all such self-deprecating thoughts. Daily criticism can even cause a plant to shrivel and die, imagine what will happen if you continue to criticise yourself. So the next time you walk past a mirror, look at your reflection and tell yourself- I love you, just the way you are!

7. Be more positive:

Before you begin any activity instead of saying ‘I can’t do this’, ‘this won’t work’ or ‘I’m sure to fail’ tell yourself you can be, do or have anything that you want once you set your mind to it. Having a positive mind set will boost your self- confidence and equip you with inner strength that will make even the impossible possible. Make it your intention to begin and end your day on a positive note. Anticipate good things and always expect a positive outcome in every situation.

All these resolutions are very simple and easily achievable. Whether you do them once or several times, one thing is certain, they are bound to make you happy and make this New Year a more memorable one!
